Always Reach For The Stars

by Jey Pandian

Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so you shall become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be; your ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil. . .James Allen,  Stateman.

I don’t have a degree. I dropped out of UC Davis with one year left to graduation. The world and many cultures seem to think that you need a degree to be successful in life. You don’t. Everyone will tell you, “its just a piece of paper that you need in order to be successful in life.”

This is a false statement. You do not need a degree to be successful in life. You need good communication skills, self-discipline and a strong desire to succeed. These three things alone will ensure that you sail smoothly through the rough waters of life.

Coming from someone who has a degree, I actually agree with a lot of this. A degree doesn’t guarantee success. It’s a piece of paper. A degree can’t interview for a job, a degree can’t interact with co-workers and degree can’t do the job. That being said, I think there are people who would benefit from going to a college 2yr/4yr for the simple fact that’s how they learn and become, but it doesn’t mean they’ll succeed if they don’t also have what you’ve already mentioned.

Agreed. People do and can benefit from going to college. It provides an opportunity to pick up skills which are not readily accessible in the public domain. It’s simply not a requirement of success.
